2023-12-01 21:18

On 28 November, H.E. Fei Shengchao, Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, joined a delegation made up of representatives from diplomatic missions and international organizations at the invitation of H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, Somali Prime Minister, to visit Kismayo, Jubaland State to observe the flood situation and communicate with local communities, during which disaster relief food funded by China was distributed to the affected people.

Ambassador Fei said that China and Somalia, though being far apart geographically, are deeply connected by hearts and minds. Recently, Somalia has been hit hard by massive floods that might be seen once in a century. The Chinese government and people feel the pains of the Somali people. Therefore, China is the first country to reach out to help Somalia by providing 1 million RMB Yuan in cash assistance, part of which has already turned into emergency supplies such as food, sugar and cooking oil to more than 1,200 displaced families in Jubaland. In addition, China will provide more support to Somalia, including food worthy 15 million RMB Yuan. China will work with the Somali government and international partners to continuously support Somalia’s disaster relief and contribute to the country’s peaceful reconstruction and development.

Ambassador Fei also had a field tour to some inundated areas and attended a humanitarian aid meeting chaired by Prime Minister Barre to learn more about the flooding situation on the ground.
