2023-09-29 04:14

On 21 September, H.E. Ambassador Fei Shengchao attended and addressed the International Day of Peace event held by UPEACE Somalia. H.E. Catriona Laing, UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for Somalia, H.E. Daud Aweis Jama, Somali Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, H.E. Isaak Mohamud Mursal, Somali Deputy Foreign Minister, and representatives of teachers, students, alumni of the University for Peace also attended the event.

Ambassador Fei Shengchao displayed a video which shows Chinese Taikonaut Zhu Yangzhu exhibiting and narrating a peace dove painting drawn by a 6-year-old Somali child, Kawkib Mahamud, at the Chinese space station “Tiangong”. Then, in his speech, Ambassador Fei underlined that last year, the Chinese Embassy held the Somali Chapter of "Tiangong Dialogue", in which Somali teenagers looked high into space and talked with Chinese Taikonauts, impressing Africa and the whole world. This year, the Chinese side organized “My Dream” Painting Competition, in which Somali youth and children participated with great interest. Among more than 2,000 paintings drawn by African teenagers, a peace dove painting by Kawkib, a 6-year-old Somali boy, won one of the ten top prizes. It was launched into space and displayed in Chinese space station by Chinese taikonauts, which was the first time in the history of Africa and the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping said that peace, like air and sunshine, is hardly noticed when we are benefitting from it, but none of us can live without it. The painting, showing the innocent aspiration of Somali children for peace and being displaced in space, carries the common dream and pursuit of not only Somalia, but also the whole world. China consistently supports the United Nations' efforts to uphold peace and supports the peaceful reconstruction of Somalia. The Chinese Embassy will continue to work with the United Nations agencies and teachers, students and alumni of the University for Peace to strengthen exchanges and cooperation for peace in Somalia and around the world. This is exactly why the International Day of Peace is so relevant today here.
